Posted: Updated:

By Staff Reports- Judge Rufe McCombs is being remembered as a "trailblazer" and a "real jewel to work for" today.

Judge McCombs was laid to rest this afternoon during a service at the Striffler Hamby funeral home.

She was not only Muscogee County's first female judge, but also the first female judge in the state of Georgia.

She later served on the bench in State and Superior Court until her retirement in 1993.

Irene Connor worked with Judge McCombs. "She was a jewel to work for and we all loved her and we were happy in our office all of us were happy. She tried 9 death penalty cases in the years we were in Superior Court so she was a hard worker. She was the best," said Connor.

McCombs passed away last Saturday at the age of 94.
