New Self-service Offering Allows Instructors to Enroll Students on Piazza in Seconds via Existing Learning Management Systems

Social learning platform Piazza today announced successful campus-wide roll-outs at the University of Michigan and Georgia Tech. Piazza also announced a new self-service offering, making learning management system (LMS) integration across all leading platforms including Sakai, Moodle, Blackboard, and Canvas, remarkably simple.
Georgia Tech and the University of Michigan are the first schools to perform coordinated roll-outs. With the campus-wide integrations, each school had 200 classes using Piazza for peer and instructor collaboration in Fall 2012. These numbers are expected to skyrocket as five more of the nation’s top schools shift to campus-wide adoption for spring terms. Cornell, Duke, Johns Hopkins, Princeton, and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, among others, are following suit.
Once Piazza is integrated, instructors can choose it in place of the standard forums when they set up their classes within the campus LMS. Students then can use their existing campus ID's and passwords for Piazza. Course enrollment information translates automatically, saving instructors time and effort. Piazza accomplished this integration through the LTI (Learning Tools Interoperability) protocol.
"Piazza is a great example of what we were hoping to see when we created LTI," said Charles Severance, Professor at the University of Michigan and former Chief Architect for the Sakai Project. "It's a product that lots of people clearly love, and thanks to this integration, it's becoming an integral, cohesive part of the learning environment at an astounding pace."
This announcement caps a year of growth in which Piazza became the first social learning platform to link with Apple’s iTunes U as well as an integral part of Stanford's Class2Go initiative. Instructors at more than 200 colleges and universities in North America now use Piazza to foster collaboration among their students, including more than 75 percent of the undergraduate engineering population at Berkeley, Cornell, MIT, Carnegie Mellon, Stanford, Princeton, and Harvard.
"At the beginning of 2011, we had a few dozen instructors using Piazza at a handful of schools, but word quickly spread. Exiting 2012, we have 25,000 instructors on the platform,” said Pooja Sankar, founder and CEO of Piazza. “As a result of this groundswell, forward-thinking technology teams at leading schools are simplifying things by making Piazza available to their faculty through their learning management systems. Now these integrations are even easier with the self-service process."
