(CNN)-
The head of Fox News apparently tried to get David Petraeus to run for president against President Obama. That's according to a report by The Washington Post.
The newspaper uncovered an audio recording of a meeting between Petraeus and a Fox News analyst in 2011 when Petraeus was commander of US forces in Afghanistan.
On
the recording, the analyst said she had a message from Fox News chief
Roger Ailes: that Petraeus should not accept any government position
other than chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and if that didn't
work, run for president.
Roger Ailes told The Washington Post he was joking and just trying to shake up the Republican primaries. He also said the Fox News contributor was "way out of line."
Petraeus was named CIA director in 2011.
He resigned last month after it was revealed he had an extramarital affair with his biographer.
