How to stop holiday overeating

COLUMBUS, GA -    The holiday season is officially under way and you know what that means, it's time for the turkey, the potatoes and let's not forget all those sweet treats.

But after all that feasting, one thing is for sure: just like that turkey, you are stuffed.

So how do you prevent over eating during the holidays?

"I never think you should start off the holidays with the intention of losing weight. I like to go into a holding pattern and give people the information to not have the inevitable I am going to gain weight," Dr. Jan McBarron says.

McBarron says you should pick five days between now and the first of the year to eat whatever you want.  And she has a few tips to make sure you don't overeat on those days.

"The first thing you want to do before you sit down to any meal is believe it or not drink 8 ounces of water, you need to dilute your stomach acids," McBarron says.

When it's time to eat, McBarron recommends only one trip through the buffet line.

"You have to remember whatever serving spoon you are using, it's going to be too much, you're going to overfeed yourself, so you want to try and just have a little bit of everything, all the food choices you like," McBarron says.

And don't forget while you eat, slow down!

"If you eat slower and talk more, you will automatically eat less," McBarron says.

McBarron also says to be mindful of the calories you will consume in alcohol. "All the calories in alcohol turn to fat so it's going to make you gain weight immediately."

If you want to indulge, McBarron recommends wine. The second healthiest choice is beer, followed by liquor, but the worst drink? She says stay away from that eggnog.

And once you figure out how you're going to eat right during the holiday season, the next step is to figure out how and when you're going to work out.

"Do your normal workout or a high intensity workout and then use your Thanksgiving or Christmas meal as your post workout meal. You've got a lot of proteins and a lot of carbs, everything that you need in there," Dennis Smith, owner and trainer of Uncommon Athlete, says.

If you don't have access to a gym, don't worry, there are plenty of body weight exercises that can get you through the holidays.

"You can go for a short walk or short job or something, but push ups and sit ups are always good, and any type of callisthenic type stuff is good," Smith says.
