(NBC News) - CIA Director David Petraeus has resigned because of an extramarital affair.
In his letter of resignation, Petraeus says he asked president Obama on Thursday to allow him to resign.
Today the president accepted.
Petraeus says he showed "extremely poor judgment" in having an affair... stressing his behavior as "unacceptable" as a husband and director of the CIA.
In his own statement President Obama says General Petraeus made the country safer and stronger during his service and said his thoughts and prayers are with Petraeus and his wife.
Petraeus was a four star general who served more than 37 years in the U.S. Army before being appointed CIA Director, Petraeus served as the commander of U.S. Central command, commander of U.S. Forces in Afghanistan and commander of the International Security Assistance Force.
