Harris County Senior Katie Blanchard has only played Volleyball for a few years. However, she's always had the drive to succeed.

"She has progressed tremendously," said Harris County Volleyball Coach Gary Johannes.

"When she started for me as a freshman, even she had doubts about herself. But I never had the doubts. I knew she had it in her, she has a drive to succeed," he said.

"It transfers from the classroom into the volleyball court, and this year she's been one of our leading blockers. I always saw it, and I think finally, this year, she finally saw it."

"I think I felt a little at a disadvantage," said Blanchard. "So I would try to like pay specific attention to what the coaches were teaching me, and like really working on getting my techniques down so I could hit the ball right."

The specifics and techniques of Volleyball might have taken her a few years to learn, but when it comes to academics, Katie's a natural. She makes all A's and actually, is a bit of a Calculus whiz.

"I mean I try, but I think it comes easier to me.I just get it," said Blanchard.

However, Volleyball teaches her things that she can't learn in the classroom.

"When you play volleyball, you might be introduced to new teammates and you have to adjust to how they are and what they're like, their specific qualities," said Blanchard.

A good student-athlete is willing to learn both in the classroom and on the court.

"It makes them smarter ballplayers," said Coach Johannes. "If they're smart in the classroom, and do what they need to do there, they're willing to study and do what they need to do on the Volleyball court."

But don't take his word for it. His team full of good students proved it. This year, Harris County won the Region Championship. For Blanchard, the future is bright. Not just as the middle blocker on a championship team, but also as a student.

"I'm really interested in Biomedical Engineering," Blanchard said. "I've applied to Auburn, Georgia, and Georgia tech, and so I'm hoping to get into those schools."
