COLUMBUS, Ga. — Due to circumstances beyond its
control, Columbus State University's club sport tackle football team has
canceled its Saturday home game against its University of New Orleans
The Columbus State team's coach, Michael Speight, intramural and club sports coordinator for CSU Campus Recreation, said he was contacted Wednesday night by a UNO representative who said the team would be unable to travel to Columbus for what was to be a 1 p.m. game at A.J. McClung Memorial Stadium. Speight said the game would be counted as a win by forfeit for Columbus State.
There are no immediate plans to reschedule the game.
The forfeit leaves the Columbus team with two remaining contests this season — an away game at Macon State at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, followed quickly by what's become a major annual event, the Doughboy Bowl, pitting the Columbus State team against a team of Army soldiers at Doughboy Stadium on Fort Benning.
That game's kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25. Tailgating is encouraged before the game, and Fort Benning will offer inflatables and a variety of games catering to families. The Army's Silver Wings Parachute Demonstration Team will land in the stadium with the game ball.
Columbus State is providing two buses to take students, faculty and staff to the Doughboy Bowl. Interested persons are encouraged to sign up online.
