Montgomery, AL (WSFA) - New details are emerging in the case of a slain University of South Alabama student.
A lawyer representing the family of Gil Collar says after looking at the surveillance tape, he's convinced Collar did not have to die.
Attorney Jere Beasley says, "I can tell you without reservation that nothing we saw in the video tape justified the use of deadly force in this case. So, there's no doubt that something caused Gil, who from all accounts was an outstanding young man who had a tremendous legacy in the Wetumpka area, just a fine young man. Something happened that caused him to act in an unusual, distressed manner. The fact he came to the police station indicates that he was not necessarily looking for trouble; in fact I think he was looking for help."
Lawyer Jere Beasley also says the officer should have used pepper spray and a baton.
