Columbus, GA - Tonight, the November election headlines are being dominated by the race to the White House. But another issue on the ballot is raising some concern in Georgia.
Today, during an information session at the Columbus Public Library officials warned against the proposed charter school amendment on the ballot.
Under the proposal a state commission would be able to establish charter schools wherever its deemed necessary, going around locally elected school boards.
Senator Ed Harbison says, "The bottom line to this thing ever since I've been on the General Assembly is that we've always talked about local control. But what this amendment actually proposes is to put a isolated layer of bureaucracy between the voters of Muscogee cCunty and the education of their children. Its wrong."
The Georgia Supreme Court ruled back in 2008 that the statewide charter school was unconstiutional because it circumvented local school boards.
