Columbus, GA - The Veterans of Foreign Wars honor Muscogee County Sheriff John Darr.
The VFW gave Darr a special recognition award for his work on the veterans dorm in the Muscogee County Jail.
The dorm opened this spring and is a joint effort between Ranger Joe's PTSD program, The Plummer House, Veteran's Court and New Horizons.
The 16 inmates chosen to live in the dorm receive group and individual counseling.
George Langford, National Legislative Chairman for the Department of Georgia says, "We gave this award to Sheriff Darr because of his innovative program to create veterans dormatories. It's important and we're proud of him. And from what I understand the Georgia Sheriff's Association is going to take a look at it and try to model something like that. So we appreciate it and it gives the veterans a chance."
Sheriff Darr has also opened a Fatherhood dorm in the jail.
