Hanford, CA (KNBC) - A California mom is in jail because her kids didn't go to school.
A judge sentenced 34-year-old Lorraine Cuevas of Hanford to 180 days in jail after she pleaded guilty to violating California's truancy law by allowing her kids to miss 116 school days without a valid excuse.
The school board said Cuevas had plenty of warning, with phone calls and letters sent to her home.
California law defines a chronic truant as any student who is absent from school without an excuse for 10 percent or more of the year.
