(CNN) - Think unemployment benefits are just for those trying to make ends meet? Think again.
According to a Congressional Research Service report millionaires are collecting a check too.
In 2008, at the height of the recession, 2,840 millionaires received unemployment insurance benefits.
In 2009, over 2,300 millionaires received unemployment according to income reported to the IRS.
On average, unemployed millionaires collected just over $11,000, or about 37 weeks of unemployment benefits.
How could this happen?
Well, despite attempts by the House and Senate, neither has successfully passed legislation limiting millionaires from collecting unemployment insurance benefits.
According to the study, cutting these benefits would save the country $20 million over the next decade.
