Opelika, AL - An Auburn man has died after his motorcycle collided with an 18-wheeler off Pepperell Parkway in Opelika.

Pepperell Parkway is a very busy road in the afternoons, Captain DeLong says because there are several roads that run off of Pepperell Parkway that don't have red lights at the intersections, he reminds all drivers not to pull out in front of any car.

Opelika Police say 20-year-old Martez Heard has died after his motorcycle collided with an 18-wheeler off Peperrell Parkway on Tuesday afternoon.

"The 18-wheeler was turning left onto Pepperell Parkway coming off a side street," Captain DeLong explains.

DeLong says Heard was traveling on Pepperell Parkway towards Auburn when the two collided.

"Motorcyclist have to look out for themselves, its definitely harder for another vehicle to see a motorcyclist and especially an 18-wheeler," Captain DeLong says.
DeLong says Heard was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, which is required by Alabama law.

Captain DeLong says, "That's about the safest thing you can do."

The driver of the 18-wheeler was uninjured. Captain DeLong says how the accident happened remains under investigation.

Police say alcohol is not a factor in this case.
