(NBC News) - Some women may be able to cut down the number of supplements they take during pregnancy.
A new review of evidence finds taking iron supplements two to three times a week prevents anemia as well as taking the pills daily.
Women taking iron intermittently also had fewer side effects, like nausea and constipation -- and their babies were no more likely to be born early or small for their age.
