COLUMBUS, GA - A Columbus doctor and his family is dead after their plane crashes in Mississippi.
According to our NBC affiliate in Tupelo, Mississippi, the single-engine plane crashed about 35 miles northeast of Tupelo Sunday.
Columbus doctor James Bartley, Jr., his wife Terry and their daughter Caroline were killed in the crash.
Authorities say the pane encountered a severed thunderstorm which likely caused the crash. The Federal Aviation Administration is still investigating.
Dr. Bartley, Jr. was a Columbus native who had been in private practice at Foot and Ankle of West Georgia as a podiatrist since 1983. He was also the chief of surgery at Doctor's Hospital.
Bartley's two older daughters were not on the plane.
