According to Auburn Police, 15-year-old Jamon Baker died from a single gun shot wound to the chest Sunday night.
"A little after seven last night, we responded to a gunshot wound off Lundsford Avenue," said Auburn Police Chief Tommy Dawson.
Baker was a sophomore at Auburn High School and was a member of the varsity basketball team.
"It's a sad day when you lose a student to a tragic accident like this," said Dawson.
Chief Dawson says Baker's cousin, 20–year-old Demario Pits, allegedly fired the gun that killed Baker. "At approximately 1:00 this morning, he came down to the police station and we interviewed him extensively. It appears it was an accidental shooting," Dawson said.
Chief Dawson says he is not releasing on how the gun went off, but he says Pits is not being charged at this time. Pits was arrested Sunday night on a misdemeanor charge, not related to the shooting. The case will be presented to the Lee County grand jury.
The Auburn City School Board along with Baker's family had no comment on the incident.
