Lumpkin, Ga. - The Mayor of Lumpkin, Georgia in Stewart County is free on bond after being arrested on battery charges on Friday night.

According to the Stewart County Sheriff's office, deputies responded to a domestic violence call on Friday night. When they got there they found Mayor Charles Gibson was involved.

He was arrested on simple battery charges. Gibson was later released from jail on $2,500 bond.

Gibson became Mayor of Lumpkin in November 2010 after a special election was held to replace the previous who stepped down due to health issues.

Gibson released the following statement to NBC 38 on Tuesday:

"On Friday evening February 10, 2012, I was resting at my home when a person of male character entered & showed disrespect for me & my family.  At this point I asked Him to leave my residence. He refused to do so.  I, Charles Gibson, then dialed 911 to ask for assistance.

At no point during this incident did I break any Laws or commit any crimes.

It is now being investigated by the Stewart County Sheriff's Department, & I put total trust in the judicial System to run its course & work as it was designed too.

I will continue to help this city grow, and receive all of the positive things that are bound, and in the pipeline for the citizens of Lumpkin and surrounding area."
