Tel Aviv Guitarist to Perform Free Concert

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBUS, Ga. – Local music aficionados will have a rare opportunity on Friday, Sept. 9, when a critically acclaimed Israeli guitarist performs for Columbus State University students in RiverCenter's Legacy Hall.

The concert begins at 1:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

The featured performer is Israel's Yair Yona, who is billed as an artist who "adapts his British folk influences and his love for the groundbreaking guitar works of John Fahey, to a captivating trip down memory lane of the 1920s and 1930s Mississippi and Delta blues, country, ragtime and contemporary acid-folk."

Yona has been in several different bands and has worked as composer and manager, all stemming from his love of the bass guitar, which he started playing when he was 16.

Most recently, Yona discovered the world of acoustic instrumental music, especially the music of John Fahey and Robbie Basho, prompting him to start composing his own instrumental music.

In 2009 he released his solo debut album, titled Remember with Anova Music. Remember was reissued in August 2010 by a U.S. record label, Strange Attractors Audio House. Today, Yona is working on his second solo album, writes the music blog Small Town Romance, runs the experimental Jazz label OutNow Recordings and hosts his own radio show.
