A 23-year-old man drowned while swimming on West Point Lake on Monday afternoon.

According to the Troup County Sheriff's Office, 23-year-old Larry Kevin Thompson of Hogansville was attempting to swim from the Moon Beach to a buoy nearby. But before reaching the buoy, witnesses say Thompson went beneath the surface and did not come up.

Around 5 p.m., the Troup County Sheriff's Office and dive team, along with Georgia DNR Conservation Rangers responded to a report of a drowning. Divers were able to recover Thompson's body shortly afterward.

Thompson was pronounced dead at the scene by the Troup County Coroner. His body is being sent to Atlanta for autopsy.
