Arrest for cruelty to children and female genital mutilation

Stefanie Tiso

A Lagrange mother is behind bars after investigators say she mutilated her infant daughter's genitals.

Troup County Sheriff’s Office Investigators received a referral from Troup County DFACS in reference to a report, given to them, of female genital mutilation. The father of a ten month old infant alleged that he was granted temporary custody of his child. After being in the father’s care for only a short amount of time, a relative of the father noticed that the female infant appeared to have been circumcised.

The infant was taken to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta to be examined by a doctor there. Based on those findings, Troup County
Investigators arrested and charged the infant's mother, 35-year-old Melody Onyonyor.

She is charged with female genital mutilation and cruelty to children in the second degree.
