East Alabama Paving Company worker killed on the job

Stefanie Tiso

An employee with East Alabama Paving is dead after police say a dump truck backed over him.

Auburn Police got the call around 1:15 on Monday afternoon. They say 55-year-old Ronald Gary Taunton of Columbus was killed immediately after being backed over.

Taunton worked for East Alabama Paving for 20 years. East Alabama Paving Company and the Lee County Highway Department were laying asphalt on Lee Road 72 when police say he was directing a dump truck. They believe Taunton did not move from behind the dump truck in time and the truck crushed him.

Police are calling this a "tragic accident" and are not expecting to file charges. Taunton's body was taken to the medical examiner's office for autopsy. The incident remains under investigation.
