Leading Technology in Orthopedic Surgery at Hughston Hospital

Maria Jones

Innovative and leading technology took center stage today in Phenix City. Dr. John Waldrop of Jack Hughston Memorial Hospital led his team as they repaired a patient’s hip by installing a new total hip replacement system. The surgery was performed while more than 200 doctors and other medical professionals watched in Atlanta via live satellite. Dr. Waldrop has performed more than 9-thousand orthopedic surgeries throughout his 30 year career and says this new technology will provide better and more movement for its patient and this procedure will prove to be a great teaching tool, showing other doctors what goes on at every moment during surgery. “This hip is designed to make sure we have perfect leg length we have stability, we don’t have dislocations. And it’s in several pieces so that this can vary and the patient gets a more anatomic true result from this hip replacement. To see the good things to see the things that are difficult, how the procedure is done and it’s a true life event, there is no delay it’s all live. And the surgeons even in the audience can interact with me while we do the surgery,” Dr. Waldrop said. The surgery took about an hour and fifteen minutes to complete. The patient is expected to remain in the hospital for about three days and will receive about 8 weeks of therapy.
