Its been a trend for some time now, going green, and it's not just everyday people that are living the lifestyle.
Construction companies are jumping on the bandwagon, going green from the ground up.
NBC 38's Julie Bercik has the story.
The Little White House Museum sits in the heart of Warm Springs. It’s home to everything Franklin Delano Roosevelt, his cane collection and his navy blue 1938 Ford. While perusing the museum, one can learn about the New Deal, the Great Depression and Pearl Harbor, it’s a trip back in history. Fast forward to 2009, where the museum is making more history as a LEED Certified Building. You But after a major renovation, the name little green house museum seems more appropriate.
It has won many awards for the environmental standards that we employed while we were here,” said Jonathan Collard, Batson-Cook Construction.
Those standards included an aggressive recycling program, capturing rain water and using it for cooling, and cutting back on waste.
“We diverted close to 90 percent of our construction debris from the landfill,” said Collard. “We kept all of our waste from going to the landfill. “
Built in 2003 by Batson-Cook out of West Point, the museum is energy efficient from the inside out. One might say the name Little Green House Museum is a better title.
“All the glass you see promotes natural light into the interior spaces,” added Collard.
National recognized for its commitment to go green, Batson-Cook has done two other major green projects, one at Callaway Gardens and the National Infantry Museum and Soldier Center.
"A lot of our customers are requiring that these days , and it's simply the right thing to do,” said Collard.
While going green does cost more, Collard said the end result is worth it, it’s simply preserving history both past, present and future.
