Firework Safety Tips from GA Insurance Commissioner

Stefanie Tiso

Georgia Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine was in town Tuesday afternoon when he teamed up with Columbus Fire and EMS, for a fireworks safety demonstration. Together, Oxendine and Columbus Fire Chief Jeff Meyer, demonstrated the proper use of legal sparklers. Even sparklers can be dangerous if used incorrectly. With 4th of July right around the corner, Oxendine says this is something everyone needs to be aware of.
“Nationwide, thousands of children are treated in emergency rooms for fireworks of different types. And what we're trying to promote is using the Georgia fireworks that are safer than the ones you would get in Phenix City, Alabama. Even the ones in Georgia can cause severe burns. The ones in Alabama are more likely to cause a very severe burn,” explained Oxendine.
Sale and use of most fireworks, including firecrackers, bottle rockets and cherry bombs is still illegal in Georgia. It is punishable by a maximum fine of $1,000 and up to one year in jail.
