Last year more than five-point-two million people were living with Alzheimer’s disease in the United States. And one out of eight people age 65 or older has the debilitating disease. Today in Columbus the United States Postal Service along with the Georgia Chapter Alzheimer’s Association unveiled a new postage stamp to bring awareness to the illness. “Alzheimer’s Disease is a growing disease, its progressive disease. Right now it affects five-point-two million people in the United States. Every seventy-one seconds someone is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or related dementia. By mid century it will be every thirty-three seconds, so unfortunately the number is growing. More and more people are going to be affected by the disease and I think its important that we get the education and awareness out in the community,” Program Director, Jennifer Nogel said. The Alzheimer’s Association is working to pass a bill in Congress where all proceeds of the stamps sold would benefit those affected and work towards a cure for Alzheimer’s.
