A few kids who usually don’t get the chance to go to camp are going this year with the help a local doctor. For the past few years, Dr. Michael Schreck has sponsored local kids with juvenile diabetes. The Foot & Ankle Center of West Georgia is sponsoring kids who qualify for this year’s camp ivy. At the camp kids will learn more about their disease and how to prevent future injuries, it also gives kids a chance to have fun in the process. “Ivey Lockett who started the camp, herself had juvenile diabetes and obviously still has diabetes. And as she was a child going to other camps, it was very difficult for her to relate to other children who did not have the disease. In 1981 she started this camp for kids who strictly have diabetes. The kids give a great response. I take all sorts of models about the foot and lecture them about foot problems that could arise and they really get into seeing the models and the anatomy and everything like that," Dr. Schreck told News 38. Although Camp Ivy is designed for kids with juvenile diabetes, other family members and friends can attend the camp as well.
