A Smith Station, Alabama man is behind bars tonight accused of shooting a teen. NBC 38’s Maria Jones has the story.
Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones said, “That a shooting had occurred in the 11-hundred block of Lee Road 240. Deputies responded to scene and an investigation was conducted.” Police say they responded to a call of an altercation that happened here on June 28th and after their investigation they discovered the teen had been shot here by 51-year-old Jimmy Medley. At this point of their investigation police say they don’t know the relationship between the 17 year-old victim and the suspect but they believe they have a motive. Jones added, “Witnesses at the scene indicated that there was an altercation of some type. Regarding a possible trespass issue and that which led to the shooting.” Medley now sits in the Lee County Jail and has been charged with first degree assault. According to Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones those charges could be upgraded later on in this case. “We generally, charge with assault in the first degree in this type of circumstance. It certainly meets the elements of assault and of course, it will presented to a grand jury in the future and grand jury’s do have the option of upgrading if you will, to an attempted murder charge,” Jones added. The victim is in the Intensive Care Unit at the Columbus Regional Medical Center in Critical but stable condition. FOR WLTZ NBC 38, I’m Maria Jones. Medley is being held at the Lee County Jail on a Ten-thousand dollars bail.
