Clean-up Continues in Macon Four Days After Tornadoes

Stefanie Tiso

Clean-up is on going in Macon, after the mother's day tornadoes that tore through Middle Georgia.

Four days after the storm, debris still everywhere and we're not just talking trees, here at this gas station there's metal everywhere. As you can, see the roof covering the gas tanks is completely twisted and turned, it looks like aluminum can.

“Whole houses gone, half houses gone, trees through roves,” said Jarred Hammett, a local minister.

Crews working on those down power lines, residents cleaning up their yards, the American Red Cross has declared Macon a level 4 disaster. For residents, reminders of Sunday's tornadoes are everywhere.

“And I was just blessed not to be home but when I got here saw glass, and water, and everybody else's stuff all torn down I just wanted to break down and cry,” said Celeste Robinson.

Robert Furtner has been cleaning up at Chambers Cove Apartments since 6:30 Sunday morning.

According to a Georgia Power spokeswoman, everyone in the greater Macon area who can receive power now has it. Clean up may be moving along. But residents say they're still struggling to come to grips with the disaster. At the Chambers Cove Apartment Complex, two buildings have been condemned so far, this is one of those apartment buildings and as you can see the roof has imploded, insulation covering the floor, making it virtually unlivable.

According to the Georgia Power spokeswoman, about 600 people in the area cannot receive power because of structural damage, or damage to the service entrance. For clean up crews, the pick-up may take weeks. For more on the volunteer effort, tune in tomorrow.
