Manners Banquet at Northside Intermediate School

Maria Jones

All parents want their children to use manners at the dinner table, and when dining out. A group of 5th graders got a chance to display what they learned in school. NBC 38’s Maria Jones has the story. For most parents, teaching their kids right from wrong and how to behave comes naturally. Now, some Parents are getting a little help when it comes to table manners. Melissa Cook/Teacher-Event Coordinator said,
“Well we talk about food etiquette, and using good table manners. And we also talk about being a good guest and a good host, when you have someone over to your home.” For the past 7 years, Northside Intermediate has hosted it’s Manner’s Banquet. But parents and teachers say it’s not just about teaching their kids etiquette at the dinner table. Cook added, “It’s just a really good age to teach them how to treat others with respect, so that as they grow up, their aware of it and they are aware of their interactions with others.” Parents were indeed proud to see what their children had learned. Mom-Britney Finley stated,
“I was really looking forward to seeing if my child learned some manners. He’s been practicing at home and I’ve been very impressed with some of his knowledge.” Dad/Shawn Finley added, “It wasn’t taught when I was in school but it would have been nice to know. When I go to a function like a banquet or something and know what I should and should not do.” DAD/Tommie Agee told News 38,
“What I see this class doing, for the young people, is trying to provide them with a way of trying to learn how to conduct themselves when they are out in public.” And the kids were ready to display their new skills. Student-Angelic Agee said, “Learning which fork to use at the dinner table.” Student-Will Finley stated, “Setting the table, and how, how to. Like which fork goes where.” After their meal, a little dancing and singing the night was complete. FOR WLTZ NBC 38, I’m Maria Jones
Every 5th grade class goes through a two week curriculum on manners at Northside. School officials say for students, the banquet signifies the passage from intermediate school to middle school.
