Watering Restrictions Eased in Columbus as of Today

Stefanie Tiso

As of today, the Level 4 drought level has been down graded in Columbus, to a Level 2.

“The Water Works has really presented to the state evidence all along during these past few months that we did have the water availability here to allow a less reduced level,” said Columbus Water Works Vice President Jim Patterson.

Now that the state is reducing the level, Columbus citizens will be able to enjoy amenities that were ban under the Level 4 drought.

“We can go back to watering our lawns and landscaping outside on an odd even schedule three days a week,” said Patterson.

Meaning even numbered addresses can water outside Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. Odd numbers can do so Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. All between midnight and 10am. All because of improvements in drought levels over the past few months.

“Moisture in the ground, flows in the rivers and the streams, the amount of rainfall we've had over recent periods of time, all those factors go into declaring what drought levels are determined by the state,” said Patterson.

The seven month long Level 4 drought over... it can serve as a lesson in water conservation. Not just outdoors, but indoors as well.

“The toilet is really the number one water user in a house. Toilets should be examined to see if there are any leaks and those repaired. We're actually encouraging people to look for a "water sense label" in looking for water-using products,” said Patterson.

According to Columbus Public Service Director, Gary Stickles, the fountains in Uptown Columbus will go back on in the next few days. First on the agenda is turning sprinklers on, on the ball fields and right-of-ways.
