In the wake of this incident, and with summer approaching, one community organization is re-thinking water safety education.
“We were just out today looking over the area. And just trying to think about ways that Safe Kids can in the future, help to educate parents and adults about kids in water,” said Pamela Fair with Safe Kids Columbus.
Using education to make sure something like this doesn't happen again. Fair said her thoughts are with Alijia and Arturio's family, and said Safe Kids Columbus has been working on water safety initiatives for the summer.
“We are in the makings of some water safety education at City pools,” said Fair.
Water safety classes will be held for free, June 18th and July 9th from 9am-noon, at the Psalmond Road Recreation Center.
“Also we're thinking about putting together some stations for boaters,” said Fair.
Fair hopes to have those stations set up by Memorial Day. While Alija and Arturio's dad copes with his loss, he said he's concerned about other kids' safety around the Chattahoochee River.
“They probably can put some barriers there or a fence in to not make in accessible for kids that are unsupervised. You know, I know kids will climb fences and do everything... but if there were some kind of structures there in the area,” said Arthur Rozier.
