Locks of Love at Lakewood Elementary

Maria Jones

Dozen’s of “locks of love” were donated today at Lakewood elementary in Phenix City. NBC 38’s Maria Jones explains.

Ages Young and Old donated one of their greatest gifts. To kids their same age, who have suffered hair loss. “We just kinda came up with this idea, and then got the ball rolling and got some girls on board to do it. And this year we actually have boys, and other teachers and parents. So its really awesome,” Coach/Event Coordinator Courtney Cooper stated. Three Brothers decided to grow their hair and make the sacrifice. “Yeah, it’s pretty cool. I mean to me its just hair, and if it can help somebody else, that’s pretty cool. And its also an excuse for you know little old ladies at church not to mess with you as much. But it’s a really cool cause and I’m glad to be contributing to it,” Nathan Heald stated. “My older brother told me, he said you know. You should look into it. So I decided to look into it. And then I found out that I could grow my hair out and give it away,” Caleb Heald added. “It’s for a good cause, for all the people that won’t have hair or anything, ” Zachary Heald told News 38.

Their parents were there for support and said they are so proud of their son’s generosity. “Oh, I’m very very proud of all three of my boys. I’m very proud of them. I am a proud mama,” stated, Teresa Heald. Your hair has to be 8-10 inches long to donate and you have to have a huge heart. There were mixed emotions for all who sacrificed their crown and glory, but they all said it was well worth it. 10 year Cancer Survivor, Mary Jane Riley was filled with emotion to see all the generous kids and adults who made the sacrificed for others. Riley stated, “You may not be the richest person, in financial means, but you may be the richest person with a big heart to help somebody else. And these children that have learned that at this young age, will be wonderful citizens of the world and they will help people all their lives. For WLTZ NBC 38, I’m Maria Jones. Donations of gifts, and coupons from the Tidwell Cancer Treatment Center, Chick-fa-la, Publix, and Brewster’s Ice Cream were given to all the participants. Tonight there will be a “relay for life” event at the Garrett Harrison stadium at 7pm in Phenix City.
