U.S. to Reduce Troop Levels in Iraq
U.S. WILL REDUCE TROOP LEVELS IN IRAQ, BAGHDAD SAYS
(CNN) – The Iraqi government says the U.S. will reduce troop levels in the country; following Iraq’s declaration of victory over ISIS.
The U.S. led coalition fighting ISIS announced Monday that its military campaign in Iraq will shift focus from combat operations to sustaining military gains against ISIS.
An Iraqi government spokesman says this means a gradual troop reduction.
The country’s military declared in December that it had “fully liberated” Iraq from ISIS and retaken full control of the Iraqi-Syrian border.
The same month, the Pentagon said there were roughly 5,200 American forces in Iraq.
