Human Remains Found in Opelika September 2016 Have Been Identified as Missing Man from 2004

Human remains found were in September 2016 in a wooded area in Opelika.

The police department sent them for examination and the results came back.

The remains are of Andrew Barnett, Jr. a man missing since 2004.

34-year-old Andrew Barnett, Jr. left a relative’s house in June 2004 to be never heard from again.

From the start, police believed something wasn’t right.

“At that time, yes ,we didn’t think he was trying to get lost in the crowd and didn’t want to be seen anymore. So, there was some suspicious circumstances surrounding his disappearance,” said Cpt. Bobby Kilgore, PIO with Opelika Police Department.

Twelve years later, a man discovers skeletal remains in a wooded area near Bennett’s Trailer Park in the 1300 block of S. Long St.

The remains sent away for testing. Another year passes before the match. Barnett confirmed dead.

“It’s a lengthy and complicated process the remains were first sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences and they do all the testing. Dental records are compared, if there’s any tissue, they’ll try to do DNA comparison and they will forward it to the FBI for more detailed analysis and it does take time,” said Cpt. Kilgore.

Opelika police said that gruesome discovery last September and the forensic report, at least now, brings certainty to Barnett’s long grieving family.

“It has been a long time and they do feel like there’s finally some closure,” said Cpt. Kilgore.
