Some Mothers Not Putting Babies to Sleep on their Backs

Medical Minute

Pediatricians say some mothers are not following the rules.

A new study reveals only 44 percent of parents always put their babies on their backs to sleep.

Yale researchers found over half of moms sometimes place infants on their stomachs or sides, which increases the risk of sudden infant death syndrome.

The study shows that mothers with little education were more likely to use the stomach position.

Experts say more research is needed to find and test the best programs to educate parents about sleep safety.
