Officer Shelby Not Guilty in Crutcher Death
BETTY JO SHELBY NOT GUILTY OF MANSLAUGHTER
The Oklahoma police officer charged in the shooting death of an unarmed black man was found not guilty of first degree manslaughter.
Officer Betty Jo Shelby was whisked out the back door of the court house after the verdict.
The Tulsa officer shot and killed 40 year old Terence Crutcher in September of 2016.
Shelby says he failed to comply with several of her commands.
However, prosecutors argued that Crutcher was never a threat to Shelby and did not make any aggressive moves towards her or any of the responding officers.
On the other hand, the defense said Officer Shelby shot Crutcher because she thought he was reaching into his SUV for a gun.
There was no gun in the vehicle.
The jury deliberated just over 9 hours before reaching the verdict late Wednesday night.
