“Spirit of Democracy,” A New Type of Movement in Lee County

Lee county residents are coming together for a new type of movement.

Lee County Spirit of Democracy is a non-partisan, grassroots movement dedicated to planting the seeds and growing the spirit of democracy for a better Alabama.

Folks from the initiative told us that a group of Lee County citizens noticed the problems of a unhealthy democracy and wanted to come up with solutions. So, they went to the people directly to get them engaged in public affairs.

“What we are all about is trying to get people back engaged in the democratic process. Us as citizens, we have all the power and with all that comes a big responsibility as well and it falls to us not our elected leaders,” said Tom Penton, member of Spirit of Democracy initiative

They had a civic forum Saturday, but say they’ll have more. Through these forums, they want to discuss specific issues affecting our country and give the stories from both sides and start the conversation.
