Inmate fatally stabbed with makeshift knife

Alabama inmate stabbed to death by another inmate.

(CNN) – Someone stabbed an inmate to death at a prison in Elmore, Alabama.

Thursday morning, officers found 35-year-old Grant Mickens injured in the prison yard of the Staton Correctional Facility.

Mickens had multiple stab wounds in his chest, his back, and his arms.

He died about 10 minutes later.

Police believe another inmate, 31-year-old Demetric Horsely — used a makeshift knife to kill Mickens.

Police say Horsely, who is already serving a life sentence for murder, will now be charged with capital murder.

Mickens had been convicted of first-degree robbery in 2002; he was serving a 22-year prison sentence for the crime.

The Staton Correctional Facility is overpopulated.

A spokesman for the Alabama Department of Corrections says the facility was designed for about 500 inmates.

It currently houses more than two-and-a-half times; that’s almost 1,400 inmates.
