Gene Kirkconnell – Director of News & Local Content

Gene caught the journalism bug as a youngster when working as a paperboy for the New Orleans Times-Picayune newspaper.

Kirkconnell is the Director of News & Local Content at WLTZ-TV First News & The CW GA-BAMA in Columbus, Georgia.

Gene joined Sagamore Hill Broadcasting in June 2016.

He has served in media leadership roles across the Southeast and Midwest US.

Gene honed his craft as a journalist and story teller over decades of service with television stations, websites, radio stations, newspapers, a wire-service, and as a content consultant & coach.

His first job, as a youngster, was as a paperboy for the New Orleans Times-Picayune newspaper. He caught the journalism bug back then, reading the newspaper daily as he prepared papers for delivery on his route.

His work has been recognized for excellence locally, regionally, and nationally with the George Foster Peabody Award, the National Edward R. Murrow Award, Emmy Awards, and numerous other awards.

Gene is an Eagle Scout.

He is the proud son of US immigrants. His father is from the Bay Islands of Honduras and his mother is from Mannheim, Germany.

Gene and wife Vicki have been married for 26 years. Their son Ian is an engineer and graduate of Auburn University. Their daughter Caroline is an actor, singer, and writer who attends Birmingham Southern University.

Empty nesters, Gene & Vicki now lavish their attention on their Shetland Sheepdog “Heidi” and their Tabby cat “Tiger”.

Gene is an avid and voracious reader of fiction and non-fiction.
