Game of the week preview: Central at Opelika

To say this Friday’s game between Opelika and Central will be a good one, may be a little bit of an understatement.

"I would think that this is gonna be another one of those classic ball games," Opelika coach Brian Blackmon said.

Two powerhouse teams in East Alabama that will battle it out in what some consider one of the biggest non-region games of the year. Two schools who are different in class size, but similar in talent.

"You’ll see well coached players and well disciplined teams go at it and yea know that’s what high school football is all about," Central coach Jamey DuBose added.

The Opelika Bulldogs are currently undefeated on the year but now face their biggest test yet.

"It’ll be a good test for us to see how well we play against one of the best teams in 7A," said quarterback John David Worth.

They take on a Central team that has played them down to the wire the last two years.  For head coach Brian Blackmon, it can’t get any better than this.

"I enjoy coaching in big games like this," he said. "I think the energy, the passion, the enthusiasm around the game on both sides and it’s just one of those games that we really look forward to because there’s a little big of a rivalry aspect to it but for us, we look at it as a chance to play a really good football team."

Central is a team that’s been growing and getting better since their loss back in week one to Hoover.

"Hoover was a devastating loss," said linebacker Nick Floyd. "But we’ve just been working hard to get better."

The Red Devils are once again chasing a region championship and are eager to finally hoist that 7A trophy. Even though a win against Opelika doesn’t help that cause, it does give them something else to fight for.

"It’s a non-region game but it’s really a bragging rights game," DuBose said. "Because when you got two great programs in this area playing each other you want the rights of East Alabama."

Central and Opelika kick off Friday, September 23rd at 7 CT.
