Lawsuit filed over NC anti-discrimination bill

(NBC News) More controversy swirled around North Carolina on Monday after opponents of a new law filed a federal lawsuit against it.

The plaintiffs in the suit say that the law blocks cities in North Carolina from creating anti-discrimination protections.

The protections in question cover sexual orientation and gender identity, with one of the hot-button issues being a requirement for transgender people to use bathrooms assigned to their biological sex.

"HB 2 is personal, it is a message to us from the legislature and the governor that we are not welcome here," said plaintiff Angela Gilmore.

Amid growing protests, Georgia’s governor vetoed a similar measure in that state on Monday.
