Apple rolls out iPhone SE

(NBC News) Apple’s encryption battle with the FBI was top of mind at the company’s new product launch Monday, with CEO Tim Cook once again pledging to protect customer data and privacy.

"This is an issue that impacts all of us and we will not shrink from this responsibility," Cook said.

The comments come on the eve of a showdown in federal court over the FBI’s demand that Apple assist in unlocking the iPhone of one of the San Bernardino killers.

"Both sides are protecting their interests, and in a way, protecting the country. Each has their principles and each is defending them," says tech analyst Andrea Cunningham.

Tuesdays have traditionally been the day Apple reserved for device announcements; moving it up a day allowed making the case for principle and products, including a new four-inch phone, the iPhone SE, packed with many of the features found in the larger iPhone 6.
