Wisconsin cheese named best in world

Monroe, WI (WMTV) A Wisconsin made cheese has won the top honor of World’s Best Cheese in the World Championship Cheese Contest for the first time since 1988.

The top prize was awarded Wednesday to a cheese made by Fitchburg-based Emmi Roth USA, which is a subsidiary of Switzerland-based Emmi Group.

"This award winning cheese is one of the best things we’ve done. I mean it’s a great award," Emmi Roth USA Cheese Maker Nate Leopold says.

The now world famous cheese is from their Grand Cru cheese line. It’s a smear-ripened hard cheese named Surchoix.

"Basically what that means is that the outer surface of the cheese is actually brushed washed with a salt brine and bacteria brine," explains Emmi Roth’s Kathy McKeon.
