Floating island drifts across lake

Watsonville, CA (KSBW) A half-acred chunk of land is floating around California’s Pinto Lake.

"I got up this morning and an island had appeared. I went to go get my camera, came back a couple hours later and it was gone," Pinto Lake neighbor Thomas Pray said.

Mike Johnston and Heidi Perlmutter also spotted the island floating by their home.

"I was just amazed because I have never seen that before and we’ve lived here 18 years," Perlmutter said.

Jackie McCloud is an environmental projects manager for Watsonville. She said the chunk of wetland has well established willows and toulies on it.

McCloud also said it likely broke off during last weekend’s storm.

"We may have a higher flow coming in from the watershed and the velocity of the water and the strength of the winds really pulled the roots up and maybe the root system got moved that way," she said.
