Pirates relying on strength up the middle
After a third place finish at last year’s JUCO World Series, it’ss safe to say expectations are pretty high for the Chattahoochee Valley Community College baseball team.
The Pirates have begun practice this week and are just three weeks away from their first game of the season. As they open the new year, there’s a lot going for them. They return the bulk of their pitching staff from last year including some quality transfers and incoming freshman. When you add catcher JT Thomas and outfielders Will Campbell and Nolan Greckel, it’s hard to ignore the talent head coach Adam Thomas has to look forward to.
"We’re gonna be strong up the middle and you cannot compete for championships if you’re not strong there," Thomas said. "So, we’re deep and talented and again, that doesn’t mean it’ gonna equate anything in the W column, it just means we’re deep and talented."
On the pitching staff, right handed ace Chase Burks said, "It’s the base of the team right there. If you don’t have pitching, it’s hard to win. You need it and we have a lot of depth there."
"It’s just awesome having that many pitchers to be able to go into the game and throw a guy out there who throws upper 80’s and mid 90’s," said catcher Frank Wager. "It’s just a cool experience to have that many good pitchers on a team."
The Pirates open the season on Friday, January 29th in Panama City, Florida.
