2nd Annual Fore the Kids Golf Classic

On Monday morning, Auburn men’s basketball coach Bruce Pearl held his second annual Fore the Kids Golf Classic. It’s an event that helps ease the burdens of many families in need.

"This event raises a lot of money," said Children’s Harbor Chief Operating Officer, Myrle Grate. "It basically means that thousands of families won’t have to walk that very difficult, scary, hard journey along with a chronic illness."

Children’s Harbor is an organization that provides help for children with serious illnesses. The event like the one held in Alexander City, Alabama was exactly what the organization needs.

"Children’s Harbor is entirely dependent on individual donations," Grate said. "We don’t receive Government funding like larger organizations, so we raise all the funds that we have to support the children and families that we serve every year."

One way they serve families is by providing campsites every year free of charge that allows children to get away from the needles and the hospital visits. It’s a camp that Coach Pearl speaks highly of, personally experiencing it last year.

"It’s been great," he said. "I got a chance to have my players come to camp in the summertime and take some of those children around on the boats and the jet skis. It changes my player’s lives because it makes them realize how fortunate they are and how challenged some others are so it’s been a really good thing."

Which is why he’s partnered with Children’s Harbor for the event, bringing in sponsors and donors who are willing to help a worthy cause.

"It’s an easy ask and together we’re doing really good things," he said.

Last year’s event raised more than $250,000 with all proceeds benefiting Children’s Harbor.  Coach Pearl says he plans on presenting a check to the organization before their home game against Colorado in mid-November.
