Auburn falls to Mississippi State, drops to 0-2 in SEC games
Another SEC game, another loss for the Auburn Tigers.
"They fought their guts out, they played extremely hard, and we got a whole lot of things we can build upon and we will get better," said head coach Gus Malzahn.
On Saturday, September 26th, Auburn fell to Mississippi State 17-9 at home in a game that marked the debut of Quarterback Sean White. He played in front of a crowd excited to see the red-shirt freshman in action. In his first career start, White threw for more than 180 yards but also added an interception early in the game that later led to seven Mississippi State points. It was a tough pill to swallow, but one he’ll learn from.
"I’ll be better," he said. "And I won’t force stuff and do that again."
“He did some good things," added Coach Malzahn. "He made a mistake or two, we thought he would. But he’s a competitor."
It wasn’t just White that had struggles. In fact, for the Auburn offense, Saturday marked a day that wasn’t so touchdown-friendly; scoring just six points in four trips.
"It’s frustrating," said running back Peyton Barber. "But at the same time, that just lets us know that we have a lot of things to work on. I feel like we beat ourselves. I kind of feel like we got a little overexcited once we got down to the red zone and that’s just something that we need to focus on this week."
For the defense, it was one of their strongest games. While Dak Prescott threw for more than 250 yards, the Tigers were able to hold them to just 17 points and 57 yards on the ground. It was a huge improvement compared to their game against LSU.
"I think we did pretty good in the run and need to keep building on that, keep getting better," said lineman Montravius Adams.
With the loss, Auburn dropped to 0-2 in the SEC. But according to them, there’s no need to worry.
"Oh we’re not gonna panic," Adams said. "We’re gonna go out every week and play Auburn football and try to win. That’s just our mentality."
Auburn is back in action on October 3rd when they’ll host San Jose State.
