Scholar Athlete: Pacelli Running Back and Linebacker, Ben Davis

For Pacelli football player Ben Davis, it’s all about speed.

"I had a trainer- a speed trainer- and I worked out three times a week with him," Davis said. "Then on my own, studying the right running form and stuff because form makes a huge difference. If you know how to run, more efficiently, you’re gonna run faster."

The senior running back and linebacker has helped lead the Vikings to a perfect 3-0 start to the 2015 season. He’s reached the end zone five times in three games and added five more scores during the pre-season.. His coach calls him a stand-out player who’s making some noise.

"It’s key for our success," Vikings coach Alan Griffin said. "He plays in the middle on defense for us and we try to funnel a lot of things to him and he makes a lot of plays for us. Offensively, we have such a dynamic running back in DeAndre Bowman that a lot of teams are keying on him and Ben is able to slip underneath defenses and make big plays as well."

Davis takes pride in helping out his team and is willing to do anything they ask of him. That attitude follows him to the classroom where he’s maintaining a 4.1 GPA while also serving as a student ambassador. But Davis is also something else- a football coach, spending his free time with the Pioneer League and passing on his wisdom and love of the game to younger players.

"I remember when I was there, the high school kids used to come and I used to think they were the greatest thing ever," he said. "So it’s cool to be my idol to the little kids."

The future is bright for this Pacelli football player who plans on continuing his academic and athletic career post high-school. He currently has an offer from Davidson College- a Division 1-AA football team who can make him an even better student-athlete.

"That’s always what I’ve wanted to do is play D-1 football," Davis said. "So getting the chance to do that is pretty great. And then seeing the other schools become interested in you because you’ve got that offer is pretty cool."
