CSU Women’s Soccer Ranked 5th in Preseason Poll

Coming off a 21-1-1 season in 2014, the Columbus State University women’s soccer program will open the 2015 campaign ranked fifth in the nation as the NSCAA preseason rankings were released on Thursday.

Defending national champion Grand Valley State sits atop the poll, with last year’s runner-up Rollins in the second spot. Saint Rose and Colorado Mines are third and fourth ahead of the Lady Cougars, respectively. The No. 5 ranking is the highest preseason mark for the Lady Cougars since the 2008 opening poll, when they were also ranked fifth.  North Georgia is the only other Peach Belt Conference school in the poll coming in at No. 19.

The Lady Cougars have a pair of 2015 opponents in the preseason rankings. CSU will have an early season top-five showdown with second-ranked Rollins on Sunday, Sept. 13. The contest will be a rematch of last season’s national quarterfinals.  A little over one month later, Columbus State and North Georgia will square off for their annual regular season meeting. The Lady Cougars twice defeated the Nighthawks by 1-0 scores last year, winning the regular season matchup and in the PBC Championship.

CSU recorded 21 wins in 2014, winning the PBC regular season and tournament titles and tying the program record for wins.  Columbus State will open the regular season on Friday, Sept. 4 against Lynn in the CSU Collegiate Invitational. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Walden Soccer Complex.
