Players Reflect on First Day of Auburn Football Spring Practice
It’s a role Jeremy Johnson is willing to take on… starting quarterback for the upcoming season.
“Now that my time is here, I’m looking to get that starting job and be the man,” Johnson said.
But the position isn’t going to be handed to him. Coach Gus Malzahn has made it clear that every position is open and that Johnson, along with the other candidates, will all be competing for that starting role.
“It felt good knowing that I was gonna be the first person to get the first reps today,” said Johnson. “I just brought a lot of energy so my teammates could follow me and I feel real good.”
Just one of the many positions that are open as the tigers began spring practice Tuesday afternoon. Veterans and newcomers hit the practice field, giving the coaches an idea of what to expect for the upcoming season. New defensive coordinator Will Muschamp was able to work on the field with the defense for the first time since being hired, his players saying it was a great experience.
“He’s intense,” said defensive back Jonathan Jones. “He expects the best from you everyday. Just the energy- he wants you to bring your best energy around and that’s what you expect from him everyday.”
While many players returned, some have departed. Malzahn announced that linebacker Anthony Swain has left the team and is pursuing a career outside of football, while punter Jimmy Hutchinson is exploring other options.
